Native American Recipes Shared Through Generations
Food brings people together, especially when the recipes carry the stories of a culture. At Blue Buffalo Trading Post, we keep Native American recipes alive for families who want to hold onto tradition and others who wish to recreate the unforgettable flavors they’ve experienced at powwows and gatherings. Whether you're Native and passing down your family’s food culture or someone who cherishes a taste from the past, our collection of recipes brings heritage to your kitchen.
A Cookbook Rooted in Community and Experience
Our authentic Native recipe dishes are more than ingredients and instructions—they’re memories, stories, and connections. After years of cooking for Native gatherings, the owner gathered and shared the dishes loved by so many.
As a non-Native woman surrounded by Native friends, she was welcomed, taught, and trusted with the knowledge of how food fits into ceremony and celebration. These Native American recipes come from those moments. They reflect the generous spirit of a community that guided her as she learned, cooked, and grew.

From the Kitchen to the Trading Post
Our journey began in 1972. Along with her husband, a respected silversmith in Kansas City’s Native community, they built a trading post that sold everything from Native American jewelry to feathers, beads, fringe, shawls, regalia supplies, and traditional clothing.
We made, repaired, and curated cultural pieces, supporting others by giving them a place to sell their work. But for her, cooking remained central. She was the cook at countless Native events and gave out recipes as freely as she served food. The cookbook grew from that experience and became a way to preserve the Native American recipes entrusted to me over the decades.

Recipes That Come with a Story
Each recipe in our collection comes with context: who gave it to her, how she learned it, and why it matters. Some were passed down from mother to child, others shared across tables at gatherings. Many of the Native American recipes include personal notes or full stories. Fry bread, for example, comes in three different versions—each unique and delicious. These are recipes to be used, loved, and passed on.
